Calibrate your monitor

It is important to calibrate your monitor if you want to see an accurate representation of your digital file displayed on it. There are a number of utilities to do this and a lot more explanations of how and why all over the internet.

Adobe Gamma is a good one if you have Adobe Photoshop, or if your running a Mac with OSX, using the Display Calibrator Assistant should work fine. You can also do an internet search using the words 'monitor calibration' along with your computer platform to find specific information about your equipment.

If you've set up the gamma of your monitor correctly you should be able to distinguish most of the steps of this greyscale from their respective black or white backgrounds.
